About the Redhead
My name is Hilary, I'm a redhead, and I've been building my business since 2006. I never imagined I’d become a "professional beauty consultant" of all things, but my self-confidence and my family have benefitted 100 fold in the last 5 years.
When Mary Kay found me, I was teaching English at Asbury University, I was deep in school loan debt and what I call “stupid-young-married debt”, I was buying groceries on a credit card, AND I was 5 months pregnant with our first baby. I’d always wanted to stay home and raise my kids myself, but we flat-out could not afford it. At the time, I didn’t know anything about skin care or makeup, BUT I was willing to learn. Fortunately, Mary Kay’s training is awesome and I learned a lot.
My big worry was that I’d have to turn into this pushy person, so I was relieved to find that all a beauty consultant really does is teach about skin care, play with makeup, and then let ladies shop. The products sell themselves, so we get to focus on service!
What clinched it for me was that I could build my client base before the baby came, then support my “maternity leave” with reorders. I liked the security of knowing that if I followed the company’s guidelines, I could spend just an hour or 2 away from my family and make the money we needed. It's nice to be paid according to your effort!
My favorite part of being my own boss is setting my own schedule around homeschooling my kids, instead of waking up at 5am to teach other people’s kids. It means so much to be able to live according to my priorities instead of someone else’s.
My husband, Charlie, and I have been married since 2000. We enjoy ballroom dancing, board games, and watching our sons discover new things. Our redhaired sons, Caspian and Perrin, are my reason for starting my business!
Why make KYredhead.com?
I am very sensitive to grammatical mistakes and aesthetic "errors" in layout and design. As a result, I feel doubly compelled to create my own materials. Since I am my own boss, fortunately, I get to do anything I want! Now, while this habit isn't exactly an income-producing activity, having custom-made and grammatically-correct materials does make my job a lot easier!
Independent Beauty Consultants with our company like to support each other whenever we can and benefit each other as our gifts allow. Well, this website is my way of using my abilities to help my fellow consultants. George Bernard Shaw said,
"If you have an apple and I have an apple, and we exchange these apples, then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea, and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas."
Makes sense, doesn't it? Mary Kay Ash often paraphrased this statement as encouragement to the independent sales force to share our discoveries and success tips with each other. After all, we aren't in competition with each other, so why shouldn't we share what works for us?
After finding out what worked for me and my business, I mixed my own ideas with aspects of various handouts and advice from training to create my own custom documents. To make them more accessible to others, some of the PDFs actually have boxes where you can type in your own information to replace mine. On the others, I've removed my name and contact information, leaving a blank space big enough for you to personalize the documents for yourself (either by hand or with your stamp or label).
Enjoy!
